It's the old Cinderella story, among others. Or as I mentioned before,
certain versions of the King Arthur story, where the child is poor and
downtrodden and abused, but turns out to be the Hero or the Princess. The
early childhood experiences give them "character and humility" (at least
in the fairy tales). This is a fantasy, not real life... even JKR says
she doesn't believe in the witchcraft. She's creating this story from
a long line of literature already imprinted in our genetic codes!
