Hogwarts is a boarding school... I don't think taxes pay for all that (at
least not in the real world -- taxes hardly pay for anything in schools
around here). And they do seem to have kitchens, since James Potter
used the Invisibility Cloak to steal food (according to Dumbledore). (I
thought it was cute in the "Cub Scout" fanfic when James loaned the cloak
to Remus and told him to go steal a side of beef for himself.) The kids
don't seem to be able to CONJURE the food (otherwise they wouldn't go
into Hogsmeade and buy candy).
Which brings up another question... WHY are the Weasleys so "poor" --
aren't wizards allowed to conjure up new clothes for themselves? I
got the impression sometimes that Mrs. Weasley was "conjuring" the
meals during Harry's visit with them, but I'm wondering if she wasn't
just conjuring the recipes, and the food had to be bought in the first
place. Seems like they ought to be able to use a little magic to improve
the living conditions.
