we really shouldn't be surprised in the slightest. Some people have
absolutely zilch for imagination, and want to make sure to squelch it
for everyone who does. The need to be practical seems to run foremost
in many of this type's minds.
I myself am a Christian, but I am not a judgemental idiot. In fact,
someone truely following the teachings of Christ would not judge people,
as we are expressly forbidden to do so. This shouldn't surprise anyone
when the fundamentalists flip about Harry Potter though, I mean, look
what they've done with other authors. Tolkien, evil apparently. Even
C.S. Lewis for Pete's sake! I mean, C.S. Lewis is one of the foremost
writers of Christian apologetical literature in this century, and a
devout Christian himself, as was Tolkien. Lewis' writings led me to my
beliefs that I follow today. I suppose again, we should not be suprised,
after all, Lewis was talking about a loving God, and I have a feeling
maybe they're following someone else.
Almost as obnoxious are the people who look at you oddly if you mention
that you are reading a fantasy book, especially a "children's" one. Don't
even let me begin about how most people react to my role-playing games
hobby! (Dungeons & Dragons, etc...) However, they usually don't get up
in arms and try to ban/burn things. Also, it's a lot of fun blowing them
a raspberry and skipping around having childish fun while they go about
their miserable day. ;)
