Hi everyone --
Yesterday I composed a letter to the NY Times re: the possibility of
them separating out a children's bestseller list in response to pressure
from other publishers. If you haven't heard, other publishers (those who
publish works by perennial bestselling authors such as John Grisham,
Danielle Steele (groan!), Robert Ludlum, etc.) are pressuring the NY
Times to create a separate children's bestseller list so that the HP books
won't continue to take up multiple slots on the main fiction list. Most
newspapers only print the Top 10 in Fiction & Top 10 in Nonfiction. So,
with HP holding potentially 4 of 10 spots, these other publishers are
pretty up in arms. Sorcerer's Stone is #11 right now, but could creep
back into the Top 10 with Book 4 release.
Anyway, I think this is utterly preposterous. If JKR's book sales warrant
inclusion on the bestseller list, then they should be there. So, I've
composed a letter which I'll post in my next message in case others want
to use it in writing their own letter (or copying it!). My only problem is
I'm not entirely sure that I've addressed it to the right department. I've
addressed it as though it's a "Letter to the Editor" for the NY Times. I'm
wondering if the NY Times Book Review is the better recipient, although I
didn't find anything on their website that was helpful in that regard. Can
any of our NY members help me out with that one?
P.S. My letter is exactly double the length that will be accepted for
publication in the Letters to the Editor section, so if you *want* your
letter considered for publication, be sure it's no more than 150 words.
