In the series (and esp the book The Dragon Knight) by Gordon Dickson,
there is mention that magic used to be around, and it slowly began to be
replaced by technology. The one reason Jim kept being chosen to go against
the Dark Powers was his knowledge of the 20th century, and how it didn't
limit him like the 14th century magicians he was surrounded by were in
their thinking of solutions. It never occurred to him to think "Oh, this
guy's a AAA magician, and I am D, so I can't counter his magic." He just
went ahead and did it, using philophies from the modern day world--in
the case I am referring to when he rescued the English Prince from the
French castle, and turned the party into holograms. What 14th century
magician would have thought of that?
