You are quite right in suggesting such a great series, golden_faile,
but you had one little fact incorrect.
"The Black Cauldron" is actually the second book in the series. "The Book
of Three" is the first. When Disney made a movie out of the series they
mixed a little bit of the two books together, pulled some stuff out of
thin air that never was in there, and called it "The Black Cauldron". A
enjoyable movie, but definately lacking the depth that the books have. I
highly recommend them - they started me on fantasy reading.
Also, a more adult fantasy series that might still be enjoyable by
members here is "A Song of Fire and Ice" by George R.R. Martin. The
first two books in the series are out right now. Look for "A Game of
Thrones" if you really want some fantasy reading that is VERY different
than your standard cookie cutter clone fantasy. The book reminds me a
little bit of Dune in that it has a noble family struggling to survive
against political backstabbing. A very good read.
