Hi:
<I have read this the other way around. I think that Hermione has feeling
for Ron. She may have some sort of 'he is famous' crush on Harry but I
do not think it is anything more than this.>
Ah, maybe it is the difference in our genders then. I would point to
the following in support of my argument (that she has feelings perhaps
for Harry):
(1) in Stone -- she throws her arms around Harry right before they drink
the potions (not much in the way of evidence but they are only 11 and
spontaneous hugs of friends of the opposite sex might be said to be more
meaningful -- <g>)
(2) Not much I can think of in CoS other than that her letter to Ron
and Harry at the Burrow is mostly wondering about Harry
(3) PoA - much stronger evidence. Her birthday gift to Harry speaks
volumes (IMO) -- Harry correctly observes that her instinct would be to
buy him a book. But, instead, she clearly put alot of thought into what
*he* would most enjoy, and it appears to have been a rather pricey gift at
that. And, she signs the card "love from Hermione" (yes, I know she signs
her letter to Ron & Harry in CoS the same way). Oh, and Hedwig went to
Hermione rather than to Ron (maybe this was because Hermione didn't have
an owl and Hedwig knew Errol might be somewhat up for delivering a gift?).
Perhaps it's all weak evidence and/or all attributable to my gender. But,
it was my feeling *prior to* PoU in any case. <g>
<Rather similar but not as obvious as the one Ginny seems to have
on Harry.>
I think Ginny's crush on Harry is completely obvious to everyone. Whatever
Hermione's feelings are (and for whom) is much more of a mystery
(considerably more subtlety there).
<The first book has the ending with all three of them being involved
but the second and third books have the endings with only two of them
involved. Does this mean we will be back to all three in the next book?>
Book 1 -- Ron falls off first, then Hermione
Book 2 -- Hermione falls off very early, then Ron
Book 3 -- Ron falls off first, Hermione is more or less there through
all of it (Harry is "on his own" for a relatively brief period of time)
In any case, I think Hermione's strong role in the final action in Books
1 & 3 strongly undercuts the argument that JKR has created a male-based
environment that lacks strong female characters.
