Someone mentioned this a few days ago... sorry, I can't remember who
it was - but it got my interest, so like Hermione would do... I did
some research.

The four houses do certainly match quite well with the 4 elements.

Gryffindor = Fire
Ravenclaw = Air
Slytherin = Water
Hufflepuff = Earth

It seems to be all about Astrology.
Zodiac signs fit into these four basic types
Aries, Leo and Sagittarius are Fire
Gemini, Libra, Aquarius are Air
Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces are Water
Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn are Earth

Fire people are the motivators. They are proud, confident and have
enthusiasm. They are bright, strong and like to take control.
(That describes Harry, Hermione and Ron quite well I think)

There is a lot more to this, but as this post is getting on the long
side - the above should be enough to start off some discussions.
