This is idle speculation (and a slight revisitation), so no need to
avert your eyes.

** JK Rowling has said that the one thing magic can't do is bring
people back from the dead [in reference to Harry's parents]. But, the
time-turner has already saved Buckbeak from the chop, so what's to stop
Ron (for example) dying, but being saved by a similar twist in the plot?

I won't repeat the complicated theories that were posted here before,
but we concluded (I think) that provided the death was not indisputably
certain - i.e. witnessed - events could be altered by a trip back in time.

** I've also read something JK said about the ghosts at Hogwarts -
why some people become ghosts and others don't (presumably, only the
troubled ones hang around?).

I wonder if one of the main characters could die, but continue to appear
as a ghost?

Are any of the present ghosts fairly recently deceased? Peeves or Moaning
Myrtle perhaps? Were any of them contemporaries of Lily & James, Snape,
Dumbledore et al?

Is The Sorting Hat possessed by a spirit? Who could it be? It's supposed
to be significant in some way.

Questions, questions...

Neil
