I was kind of bored the other day, so I went around the Internet and
looked up different names found in the HP books. I got these off of
various web sites, but I could not find Reubeus (Hagrid's first name)
or Albus (Dumbledore's) anywhere. It got me thinking...we never found
out what Quirrell's first name was, did we? Anyway, enjoy!
Harry, a 2-syllable boy's name of Teutonic/Old English origin, means:
Head of the house; warrior.
Hermione, a 3-syllable girl's name of Greek origin, means: Messenger;
of the earth.
Ronald, a 2-syllable boy's name of Norse origin, means: One with powerful
authority.
Ginny, a nickname of Virginia, a 4-syllable girl's name of Latin/various
origin, means: She who is pure; thriving; strong.
Arthur, a 2-syllable boy's name of Latin/Celtic origin, means: Noble;
strength; bear.
Molly, a 2-syllable girl's name of Hebrew/Irish origin, means: Bitter one.
Dudley, a 2-syllable boy's name of Anglo-Saxon origin, means: From the
meadow or clearing.
Vernon, a 2-syllable boy's name of Latin/French origin, means: Springlike;
youthful; of the alders.
Petunia, a 4-syllable girl's name of Native American origin, means:
The petunia flower; reddish-purple.
James, a 1-syllable boy's name of Hebrew origin, means: One who supplants;
replaces.
Lily, a 2-syllable girl's name of Greek/Latin origin, means: A lily or
lilac; blue-colored flower.
Minerva, a 3-syllable girl's name of Greek origin, means: With wisdom;
thinking.
Alban (closest thing I could find to "Albus") This boy's name is used
in English. Its source is Albanus, a Latin name meaning "White."
Myrtle, a 2-syllable girl's name of Greek origin, means: Myrtle tree;
victory.
Tom, a 1-syllable boy's name of Aramaic/Greek/Hebrew origin, means:
A twin.
Remus - The name's spelling coincides with the Latin word for
''oar.'' Perhaps for this reason, ''swiftness'' has been suggested as
a meaning for this name. (note: I found "Remus" in a book of baby names
at home; according to the book it means "fast-moving."
Sirius, a 3-syllable boy's name of Greek origin, means: Brightest star
Peter, a 2-syllable boy's name of Greek origin, means: A rock; stone.
Joanne, a 2-syllable girl's name of Hebrew origin, means: Gracious gift
of God. (note: this is also the meaning for JoAnna) *wink*
