Near the end of chapter 9: The Writing on the Wall. They are discussing
who they think has opened the chamber and Hermione is unconvinced that
it is Malfoy. Maybe not that strong a clue but still! And yet again
Hermione was right about something!

The slap could be back to the idea of hate and love being very close
together.
