Hi:

<<<I always thought that Harry was a diminuative (sp?) of Henry or
(less common) Harrison.>>>

It definitely is a dimunitive of Henry, but it's more often a name on
its own. My husband's family has several Harrys, and they are all just
Harry. Harry S. Truman was just Harry. The name Harry is everywhere in
books & movies (maybe I notice it more, now??). Anyway . . . I do think
it's most common for it to just be Harry.

<<I knew a guy in junior high school named Harold, and his nickname was
Hal. In fact, the only Harolds I've ever heard of were always called
Hal.>>>

Me too. And name books don't list Harry as a nickname for Harold. They
give it as a name on its own and then say "sometimes a nickname for
Henry."
