Actually, David McCullough's Truman bio is one of my all-time favorite
books so . . . The initial "S" was not added by Truman himself. His
parents just gave him the initial because they couldn't decide whether
his middle name should be after his maternal grandfather, Solomon,
or his paternal grandfather, Shipp.
