Have we ever seen the chess pieces playing by themselves before? I know
they are alive in the sense that they move where their players tell them
to move, but do they play by themselves? Maybe this is what Hermione
meant when she said McGonagall made them alive. Ron directs the black
pieces but not the white ones.
Just a thought.
