I'm an English major (although I'm not planning to be a teacher; I want
to be an author -- maybe the next J.K. Rowling? Hehehe...I wish!) and I
*adore* the Harry Potter books. I think Rowling is a genius because of
all of the plot twists she works into her books. In "Sorcerer's Stone,"
when I read the sentence, "It was Quirrell," I just about had a heart
attack! As Quirrell explained everything to Harry, I could see it too! She
did the same thing with CoS and PoA.
I wish they hadn't of Americanized the books. I read books from the
UK when I was younger and I never had trouble understanding them. If I
didn't know what something was, I'd look it up or ask an adult. I love
the British accent and culture -- one of my dreams is to spend a semester
studying in London; I hope to achieve that goal in a year or two.
I also enjoy Hagrid's dialect. I think it does add something to the
character -- I mean, I love Hagrid to death, but he isn't exactly the
brightest crayon in the box, is he? Especially when it comes to magical
creatures like Aragon. :) I think his dialect is "country-like," for lack
of a better term, indicating that he was raised in rural areas and might
not have had a lot of formal education before coming to Hogwarts. I hope
I'm not insulting anyone, because that is NOT my intent! It's just MHO
(My Humble Opinion).
