Hi Melanie,
I'm guilty of the same thing. I visited the club a few times and joined
a few days ago but never introduced myself.
My name is Margaret. I currently live in Long Beach but grew up in San
Diego and most of my family still lives there.
I also bought the first book for a child, my 10 year old nephew. My
sister asked me to read it myself first because of the subject matter
(magic, etc.). Needless to say, my nephew never got that book; I bought
him another one.
I love the way Ms. Rowling uses language; it's so sly. There are phrases
that just stick in my mind like too big to be allowed or pig in a wig. And
the names!
I do think the press is missing out on one of the main points about
Harry. It's wonderful the books are getting children to read. But they
haven't remained on the bestseller lists for a year because nine-year-olds
are buying it. I get together with 6 other adults at Thanksgiving every
year and the last time between the 7 of us we had all three books. My
sister and her roommate were reading 1 to each other, I was re-reading
2 for the ??th time, and our hostess was in the middle of 3.
I like this club because as someone else said, there is no name-calling,
etc. And some interesting ideas are discussed.
