Let me bounce a new theory off you guys.

We know that Hogwarts was founded by four witches and wizards but that
deep disputes and rivalries broke out between the four. We know that
Voldemort was the last descendent of Salazar Slytherin. We don't know
what happened to the descendents of any of the other three. We do know
however that Harry could use Godric Gryffindor's sword since he used
it to kill the Basillisk in Chamber of Secrets. I've forgotten exactly
what Dumbledore said to Harry when he revealed the origin of the sword
but it was something about being a true Gryffindor.

Could it be that the dispute went beyond just arguments and turned
murderous? Could it be that the descendents of Slytherin sought to
exterminate the other lines? Could it be that the last descendent
of Salazar Slytherin sought to kill the last descendents of Godric
Gryffindor; Harry and his father? Lilly would be incidental since she
wasn't a descendent of Gryffindor.

Just a thought.
