I like Skimmel's theory actually. It adds credence to the thought that
Voldemort was after both male Potters. But, we still don't know if
Voldemort was actually wanting to kill James Potter or not or whether
killing James was merely incidental to getting at Harry. I wish Rowling
would have given us some background info on the Potter side of the family
in one of the earlier books! It's sure hard to really support this theory
without some good genealogical evidence from the books. But, the fact
that Harry pulled Godric Gryffindor's sword from the Sorting Hat is,
in my mind, reasonably good evidence that Harry *could* be a descendant
of Gryffindor.

Yes, I agree that the Sorting Hat spotted the potentiality for both
Gryffindor and Slytherin in Harry (which is of course attributable to
Dumbledore's supposition that Voldemort transferred some of his own
powers to Harry when he tried to kill him). I've always really liked
that part of Chamber where Dumbledore prods Harry into recognizing that
he has the potential for both good and evil but made a reasoned choice
in favor of Gryffindor (which the Sorting Hat honored if you will). It
really adds depth to Harry's character that he chooses "good" over
"evil." In thinking about that, I wonder if Dumbledore exposed Harry to
the horrible Dursleys as a means of "bringing out" his desire to choose
the good side. I'm not sure I'm phrasing that effectively to convey what
I mean. So, I'll stop now.
