I was looking at a Harry Potter website the other day, and someone had
offered the theory that Peter Pettigrew was Neville Longbottom's father.
When you look at it, there are some uncanny similarities -- both
look similar (in Harry's dream about Black "killing" his parents, he
pictures Pettigrew as looking like Neville), both like to hang around
with "stronger" and more popular friends -- Pettigrew with Potter,
Lupin and Black; Neville with Hermione, Ron, and Harry.
In addition, Neville lives with his grandmother --no mention of what
happened to his parents -- and Pettigrew's mother is mentioned several
times in POA as getting only Pettigrew's finger and the Order of Merlin in
a box after the attack on the Potters. Perhaps Neville's grandmother is
Pettigrew's mother? I don't know why Neville would be Neville Longbottom
rather than Neville Pettigrew, but who knows? Perhaps after Pettigrew's
"death," Neville's mother remarried and Neville took his stepfather's
name, or perhaps it was his grandmother who remarried and Neville adopted
her name. ???
The Pettigrew/Neville possibility is, if nothing else, an interesting
theory. It also brings up the possibility that if Pettigrew could become
a traitor, perhaps Neville is capable of the same.
Wow. This post is longer than I realized it would be. I'll be quiet
now. :)
