Once upon a time, there was a woman named voicelady. She was the
type who never quite forgot how to be like a child and enjoy things
unselfconsciously. Her friends and family seemed to like this about her,
or they were secretly amused by this and let her be herself anyway.
Some of voicelady's favorite things in the whole world were the movies
she'd seen and the books she read as a child. They had instilled in her
a sense of magic and wonder. She still, to this very day, will sit and
watch Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory and be as pleased with it
as the first time she ever saw it practically 30 years ago.
One day, she noticed that children's books, (CHILDREN'S BOOKS!) were on
the best-sellers list of the New York Times! This excited her very much,
because she thought, "How wonderful! There are more people out me like
there than I thought! Maybe world peace isn't too far behind!" Then
she started reading articles in pulitzer prize winning newspapers in
the main section, not just Arts & Leisure, about the wonderful impact
these books were having on children who'd never read anything with
enjoyment before. Intrigued, she immediately rushed out and bought all
three books in the series. Suffice it to say, she fell in love with
all of the characters, even the nasty ones, because they were just the
type of people that you love to hate. Her friends noticed her reading -
and re-reading - and re-reading - the books. Then they saw her listening
to the audio CDs. She was having so much fun and was so unselfconscious
about it, that they all became curious. Even her husband, who had his
silly young side but very rarely let outsiders see it, became curious
about her fascination with Harry Potter. She spoke about him as if he
were a real person. Granted, she had always enjoyed youthful pursuits,
but this was almost too much!
So with more than a mild curiosity, they all began, rather hesitantly,
perusing the pages of our gallant young hero. And lo and behold, once
again, Voicelady had not steered them wrong. They all became enrapt with
the adventures of Harry Potter.
The End
next week, voicelady will write an essay entitled: "Styrofoam From The
Outer Rings of Saturn, Myth or Fact?"
