Consider the Golden Compass by (I think) Phillip Pullman. I just finished
it and enjoyed it. Its a long one by comparison to Ramona and ... I
discovered to my dismay... the first of a group.

I'm just starting "I capture the castle" by Dodie Smith. I'll let you
know what I think when I finish it.
