I think Dumbledore will be around until Book 7. Dumbledore will
continue to give Harry the tools and the guidance he needs to thwart
Voldemort. But, at some point, Harry will have to go it alone, and I
think that will happen in the last book.

My guess for the death "the reader will care about" in Book 4: one of
the Weasley twins.
