I'll take up the thread.
I did a lot of travelling last year and consumed mass quantities of
books. I read an article about what a big phenomenon these Potter books
in an inflight magazine and so the next time I was stateside I went to
the library and asked if they had any of the Henry Potter books. The
librarian explained to me that it was Harry Potter and that there was a
waiting list nearly a year long to check one out. That was the longest
list I'd ever heard of so I decided to shell out the money and buy a copy.
Normally on a transatlantic flight, you try to sleep as much as you can
but on this one I read Sorcerer's Stone straight through. A delightful
book. Upon arrival in Moscow, I gave the book to a friend of mine
there. He's also an engineer and he found it delightful as well. Our
conversations tend to make a lot of references to muggles and such. As
soon as I got back to the states I bought another copy and read it
again. Then I started reading it to my 9 year old at bed time who had
somehow never read the books before.
I guess I'm a hard person to buy presents for because my family jumped
at the chance to buy the next two books for me for Christmas. I took my
time reading them... it was slightly after New Years Day before I had
finished both of them. Just last night I finished reading Prisoner of
Azkaban to Ariel. It was a tearful event. She pronounced to me that she
couldn't wait until July for the next one.
So in my case, I introduced Harry Potter to the family and my child
in particular.
