The director has already been chosen -- Chris Columbus.

Spielberg opted out of the HP movie because he wanted to cast Haley Joel
Osment in the role of Harry, but Warner Bros., JKR and others involved
want to cast an unknown British actor in the role. I agree with Warner
Bros & JKR on that one!
