Is anyone here familiar with the Myers-Briggs system of personality
testing? It is a great way to understand more about your temperment and
what makes you "tick".
Last night I had some time on my hands and went through the four
"temperments" and sixteen personality "types" and began to doodle on how
these corresponded with the temperments we Harry Potter fans have come
to associate with the four houses at Hogwarts: Hufflepuff, Ravensclaw,
Slytherin, and Gryffindor. The sorting hat is interesting in that it does
seem to be thinking about what each child's temperment is and what "style"
will most contribute to their success, so I thought these correspondences
to be interesting.
First, to avoid rehashing everything here, read the following about the
four temperments and then the sixteen "types":

and
http://www.personalitypage.com/high-level.html
Then, if you want to take the test, go to:
http://www.personalitypage.com/indicate.html
What I came up with in sorting all these "types" according to house was
the following. (These are very general, and I went according to my own
gut feeling, not spending too much time on it. The letters will make
sense once you read the links):
Hufflepuff: ISTJ, ISTP, ISFJ, ISFP
Ravensclaw: INFP, INTJ, INTP, INFJ
Slytherin: ESTP, ENTP, ENTJ, ESTP
Gryffindor: ESFJ, ENFP, ENFJ, ESFP
My reasons were as follows: I figured that Slytherin and Gryffindor seemed
to be the more "extroverted" houses in the books (I and E above indicate
"introverted" and "extroverted" respectively), while Hufflepuffs with
their quiet loyalty and Ravenclaws with their love of scholarship, seemed
more tempermentally "introverted". Some of the "introverted" descriptions
seemed to emphasize loyalty, others emphasized the intellect. I divided
those into Hufflepuff and Ravensclaw respectively.
In the extroverted catagory, I noticed that some descriptions emphasized
idealism and putting the interests of others ahead of oneself--
I tended to sort these in Gryffindor. Others appeared to emphasize
ambition, socializing, the life of the senses, etc. I tended to put
these sensation-seekers in Slytherin.
I don't know about thes rest of you, but I think there is a real
correspondence here. I am very intrigued by this. I would love to hear
other thoughts! If anyone else takes the test, let us know your results.
I came out as ENFP (The Idealist-Advocate): Gryffindor.
