Here is my scoop on Draco (a yeah, it IS a great name, huh?)

First of all, I do not agree with vikar25 that "nothing good has ever
come out of there (Slytherin yet." In the first book Hagrid says that
everyone who turned to the Dark Side came from Slytherin-- but that
is not the same thing as saying that all Slytherins turned to the
Dark Side. According to the sorting hat, the main characteristic of a
Slytherin is that they are AMBITIOUS and will do anything to accomplish
their ends. Faced with temptations by the Dark Lord, this can be a great
weakness, but under other circumstances it can be a good thing. Also
remember what the sorting hat says to Harry "I see greatness... you
could be great. Slytherin would help you on the way to greatness." All
he says is that he would do well-- not that he would do evil.

About Draco: I too hate his attitude, but I agree with Morrigen that
he may indeed turn to good. I see most of his evil stemming from his
father's influence, and as we all saw in the second book, his father is
pretty cruel to him. Rowling has hinted that he and Harry migth team up
in Book Seven, but I can't remember where I read that.

I guess I look at his character from the point of view of "what will
be narratively interesting?" He isn't like Dudley-- he is intelligent,
he has complexity, he has conflicts. He initially wanted to be friends
with Harry. Something has got to happen with him.

My theory: I don't thinka Hermione/Draco romance is in the offing,
but there is a rumor that Crabbe will be one of the victims in the next
book. The reader won't care about this so much, but it will hit close to
home with Draco, and he will see that NOBODY is safe. His father's word
tends to be "Stay out of it, let the Dark Lord get on with it..." but
I think that he will not stay out of it so easily.

I also have a pet theory that Dumbledore will die and that Lucius will
return to the board of govenors with a vengeance......

We will see!
