I agree with Suzanne that Hagrid said that all dark wizards had come
out of Slytherin, but that doesn't mean that all Slytherins turn to the
dark side. But I'd like to take that a step farther, and say that Hagrid
made an absolute statement there, which if he'd thought about it later,
he would still have come up with exceptions.
For example, were Sirius Black and Peter Pettigrew Slytherins? I doubt
it, unless James Potter and Remus Lupin were too (which I doubt even
more). But, when Hagrid made that statement, he and everyone else in the
wizarding world thought Black had turned to the dark side; and Pettigrew
really did.
I also have to wonder where Harry would have ended up, had he not known
to ask not to be in Slytherin. Suppose he had walked into that hall,
never having heard the house names, even as little as he had. He would
only know what the Sorting Hat had to say about Slytherin (which didn't
sound so bad). So, he wouldn't have been up there thinking "Not Slyterin,"
and may very well have ended up in there.
OK, I know I've rambled enough. But I'd like to finish by saying that I
have finished the sorting quiz I mentioned in March. At least, I have my
bare minimum of ten questions, though I'd like to have 15 or 20. But,
in writing it, it was difficult to separate the Slytherin answer from
the Gryffindor on some questions. Now there's something to think about.
