Another thing...

We know that there are only five Gryffindor boys in Harry's year, so we
should expect roughly the same number of girls and the same numbers in
each of the other houses. That makes about 40 pupils per year and about
70 per house, in the entire school.

Perhaps - if Quidditch is such a specialist sport - 70 is only enough to
spawn a single team of 7 for each house, and maybe a reserve or two. If
they find any really good players, like Harry, they obviously hang on
to them until they leave the school.

Well, that's my latest idea on that...
