Even in this recent discussion of detail, I have not had the impression
that people were picking on the author or criticising the book. I
certainly have not gotten the impression that anyone wants to ruin the
fun for someone's child!
Quite the opposite-- I think this luxuriating in and fussing about
detail and wondering about the smallest things is just another way of
relishing something you love! A number of us are writers, and writers
really do eat this stuff up. When I was a child I was a Sherlock Homes
fan, and my friends and I used to do the same things with those stories--
reading them over and over and wondering did he or didn't he with Irene
Adler,a dn what kind of pipe did he really smoke. We would look up old
maps of England and fuss about exactly where things took place, etc.
This is a mark of fandom-- which is all about love, and is the highest
compliment to the writer and the books.
