Steve, 
did you ever see Martin Short as the Mad Hatter in the NBC movie Alice in Wonderland?  They emphasized his head computerly (is that a word? Grins), so it was horribly enlarged, just like in the books.  Why couldn't they use this for Hagrid's whole body?

  I can't believe this just occurred to me, but aren't they going to 
  need some serious special effects to make Robbie Coltrane look a lot 
  bigger?  How tall is he, anyway, and how tall is Hagrid (I picture 
  seven or eight feet tall for Hagrid)?  I think this is what vjmerri 
  meant about effects that blend into the story and don't call 
  attention to themselves: they need to make Hagrid look larger than 
  life without making it look fake.  Neat trick if you can do it.  I'm 
  going away now for half a week; hope I can catch up when I get back :-
