.  Since we learn in GoF that Dumbledore considers 
Lupin "part of the old gang" then he would have had sufficient 
knowledge of his abilities to know that he could hold off a dementor.


I think it's more like, since Dumbledore hired him as DADA teacher, he has an idea of his skills (How do you send your resume for that position?  Or do the interview?) like any employer would of his employee.  So Dementors weren't a problem.  Perhaps, that's also a reason he hired him, he beat out the others by knowing the "cure"/"anti-spell" to the Dementors where others (Snape?) didn't!
