Try the young adult series by Diane Duane:

First is So You Want to Be A Wizard
Deep Wizardry
High Wizardry
A Wizard Abroard

All quite good.  My favorites are the first two.  Interestingly, I think that
when the series starts out, Nita, the protagonist, and her partner, Kit, are
11.

There is also a related spin off series (where the wizards are cats, operating
the worldgates.  They know an awful lot about physics/string theory)
