In that vein (sort of) I love Diane Duane and when I found her I also found 
Tamora Pierce who has written: 

Song of the Lioness Quartet
The Immortals Quartet
The Protector (will be a quartet eventually, only the first one is out)
Circe of Magic Quartet (Different universe then the other three)

These are fantasy set in a medieval-ish world, just a recomendation
