Today the former fifth grader who dared to correct my pronunciation
of Hermione last school year turned up in my last hour Drama class.
I distinctly remember that I embarrassed him in front of the class
with my condescending "Jon, I think *I* should know how to pronounce
the name, dear. I know a Hermy-own in real life. Thank you, but
let's continue with our reading." I apologized to him openly and let
him know that he had been right after all. I also told my Drama
class exactly what I'd learned from the experience. "Teachers don't
know everything. No one does. Just as you have a lot to learn from
me, I have just as much or even more to learn from you."
Jon accepted my "mea culpa" and promise of a small treat quite
graciously. And had the grace not to say "Told you it was *Her-my-oh-
knee*!".
