That is the term that has been applied to the person by the Secret 
Service and general White House usage.  It is possible that the first 
published mention of the term may have been William Manchester's _The 
Death of a President_.  In fact I started to say that the term was 
actually the Secret Service radio code word applied to that person 
during President Kennedy's trip to Dallas in November 1963, (op. 
cit.); but I now recall that the page listing all the code names 
actually said the "Bagman's" code name was brilliantly unimaginative: 
"Satchel".
