That's what I thought when I read that passage. But I'm biased, I like Snape
and wish he weren't *that* mean.

Dumbledore said in PS that Snape hated James even more because he saved his
life and felt that he had to repay that debt and tried to protect Harry.
Then he should have wanted to keep James alive because he felt that he was
owing him -  and he still helped Harry because he couldn't save James and
probably was feeling even more guilty...
