I understand it as a mixture of languages such as vol=full de=of mort=death. I wonder if this was intended by the author?

  I always thought Voldemort would be pronounced "Voldemort" because I 
  saw a French connection.  My younger child, who has only just started 
  French at school, pronounced it with the t at the end.  

  Jo Rowling pronounces it with a t at the end as well.
