How about: the letters to Harry weren't delivered by owl at all. They came
by Muggle post, by magic through any available orifice, and then via Hagrid.
No owls carried anything until Hagrid's owl brought him his Daily Prophet.
Perhaps this is different in the movie, especially given the shots of them
flying a clearly non-snowy owl in the vicinity of the Privet Drive set.
