(crawls out of lurkdom)

I just picked up a book from the library -- an Oscar Wilde selected poems
compilation. I was leafing through it on the train, and read this
particular poem, entitled, "The Sphinx".

It's a ten page long poem, so I'm quoting the relevant bits:

A thousand weary centuries are thine while I have hardly seen
Some twenty summers cast their green for autumn's gaudy liveries.
But you can read the hieroglyphs on the great sandstone obelisks,
And you have talked with Basilisks, and you have looked on Hippogriffs.

I'm not very well versed with mythology and such, although I do know that
Basilisks are legendary Greek reptiles. Are Hippogriffs such too?
