About griffins, I can add that they were thought to combine the noblest of
two worlds--the lord of the air and the lord of the land, by combining an
eagle and a lion. Sort of the logic that gets people to take too many
vitamins...if a little is good, then more should be....etc.

Hippogriffs aren't as old, are discussed in my heraldry books as medieval
charges, but said books are in the room with the lightly sleeping sick baby.
