Boys are like that.  I too think males can be very obtuse at reading
those signals and even more so when they're 14.  I would imagine there
are a number of reasons why Hermione would actively want to hide her
feelings, whether they are for Harry (as I believe) or Ron (as others
believe).  Neither case is particularly clear -- you have to look at
signals & small signs to get a read at all on what Hermione might be
thinking.  I personally think it's a stronger case that she has romantic
feelings for Harry but .... there's my bias.  <g>

I was pretty much a "no-shipper" with mild R/H tendencies (never fully
believed it was a good thing) until PoU converted me back in March
sometime.
