I thought that the meaning of the socks that Dumbledore saw in the 
Mirror of Erised was fairly clear -- he yearns for family and for 
someone to take care of *him* (symbolized by knitting him socks).  
Being the point man in the struggle against Voldemort must be a 
lonely life.
