It's one thing for a Modern (or Postmodern) to use the word 
'barbarian', but another for a Classical (Roman, or still more so 
Greek) to use it. If you had said 'philistine', I would have cut 
you and some slack and assumed that you know that that the 
Greek-speakers who introduced hearths to the east-by-south-eart 
coast of the Mediterranean died out some 2800 years ago...
