I can't believe I didn't think of that!!  As a (now lapsed) member of the
Sons of the Desert  - the L&H fan club - I should hang my head in shame.

I don't see Fudge as nearly so large and pompous as Oliver Hardy, but more
as a smarmy, mole-like man; rather reserved and dull.
