It was Nicolas Flamel and his wife, Perronnelle (doubtful spelling on her
name). They died because they were 600+ years old, and the philosopher's
stone was what was prolonging their lives, and when it was destroyed, the
natural process took over. Which, incidentally, was one of the properties of
the philosopher's stone, alchemically--it didn't simply produce gold. The
production of gold from dross material was in large part an allegory for the
process of self-improvement and personal development and growth, the path of
seeking the stone.
