Oooh, interesting,  Melanie. Presumably the founders already had 
students (apprentices?) when they started the school. That would be the 
origin of the four houses. Perhaps they came up with the sorting hat  
in an attempt to avoid  conflict with each other and the students as 
well as to perpetuate the process after they were dead. It makes the 
whole tradition of secrecy surrounding the hat and the sorting more 
logical.
