Way back when we were doing the estimations of the number of Hogwarts
students, Neil openly wondered in post Y6498 about the number of
teachers being more than 12 he knew about at that time. Now I can't
begin to give an estimate to how many teachers there are, but
something in GOF jumped out at me suggesting that the actual number
of teachers is higher.

In GOF Ch. 30 (The Pensieve) on pg. 584US, or pg. 507UK +/-1 (is this
right?) Harry sees "rows and rows of witches and wizards" in a
mysterious room and concludes that the room is not in Hogwarts
because he knew "there were not nearly that many teachers at
Hogarts." Now I have no idea how many rows and rows comes out to
be. But what seems clear to me is that even Harry doesn't know the
exact number of Hogwarts teachers.

My synopsis doesn't quite capture my initial reaction. Read the
complete passage and see what you think. But to say "It surely
wasn't Hogwarts" and "not nearly that many teachers" just seems to
suggest a brief, small doubt in Harry's mind that he is in Hogwarts.
