Actually, I think he's from Yorkshire, which is in Northern England.  But
that's not relevant.  What is relevant is that it's likely he was
exaggerating.

1) Hagrid's not the intellectual type, so is unlikely to have done the
research required to authoritatively say things like that.

2) A Slytherin was responsible for getting him expelled for something he
didn't do.  He's unlikely to be that well disposed towards them.

I'm pretty certain that not all dark witches/wizards are Slytherins.
Dangerous to think otherwise, because you might just end up trusting someone
who you shouldn't, because they're not a Slytherin and you thought they were
"safe".
