i think that it has a lot to do with Dumbledore, and not actually a 
symbol for elves or such.  Dumbledore said he saw socks as christmas 
presents in the mirror of erised.  This mirror is supposed to reflect 
one's inner most desires, right?  I kept expecting harry to give 
Dumbledore a pair of socks dring the whole book. and then in books 2, 
3 and 4 i kept expecting that he'd remember.  My opinion is that 
Dumbledore is seen as a most powerful wizard, and that as such, socks 
would be presents beneath him. instead, he always recieves books as 
presents.
