Did you see it when first out?  It had been edited so badly the plot 
fell apart (like the recent Avengers movie).  I understand that when 
it had a lot of removed footage restored, it became rather better.

However, I also understand that the Dune books are the inverse of
Trek 
movies - the even-numbered ones are the bad ones.
